About Us

It started from my own love of traveling and outdoor adventure. As I share my tales with friends, colleagues and acquaintances, I realize that a lot of people are thrilled. They would also love to journey across vast lands in a 4x4, go trekking and camping in mountains and forests, cycle along mountainous trails or even climb a snow mountain. Yet they are reluctant to do it. Many people think that adventure travel is physically demanding and risky. Coupled with the fact that adventure-style travel involves extensive planning and troublesome logistic arrangements, not many people actually do it.

SHANGRILA ADVENTURE was founded back in 2004 with the aim of promoting adventure-style travel in a fun, safe and hassle-free manner. We provide a basic framework and take care of the logistics, other than that you have the space to explore on your own as if you are backpacking!

In 2007 alone, we have successfully organised 13 trips. We had a great & successful 2007. So far, we have 100 participants that have gone on adventures with us from countries like USA, Norway, & Malaysia.

As we are soley focus in the area around southwest & western China, we have been able to establish close working relationship with the locals. We have dedicated drivers, guides as well as support staff to assist us in the running of our adventure trips. We offer Trekking Adventure, 4x4 Overland Journeys, Climbing Expedition, Cycling Trips and Special Interest Trips (e.g. photography, pilgrimage trek). Currently we go to YunNan, SiChuan, Tibet, XinJiang in China and Kazakhstan (view map). These regions have the most exciting topography, great bio-diversity as well as rich cultures shaped by the historical settlers who were the real adventurers.

About the Founder

My name is Alvin Low. I founded SHANGRILA ADVENTURE with the aim of sharing the excitement and fun of adventure travel. I love the outdoors and exploring places. I love mountains. Names such as Everest, K2 and Cho Oyu, SiGuNiang4 inspire me. Being an experienced high-altitude trekker, I am familiar with Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and will advise you on the Do’s and Don’ts when you are traveling high. I have been to altitude above 6400m, climbed peaks in Nepal, SiChuan and YunNan China, and trekked through numerous high-passes of more than 5000m. Someday, I wish to take on one of the 8000+m giants.

I worked in the IT industry for many years since graduation. In 2005, I started SHANGRILA ADVENTURE. Since 2005, we have organized >20 trips. Since late 2006, I am working full-time on my love and passion. I believe that there is a lot of potential in the region that I am operating. And I know that there are many people out there, especially urbanites, who would really be happy to be out there in the wilderness!
