Mount Kailash Pilgrimage Trek

Synopsis of the 52-km circuit

Being the key sacred mountain of 4 religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Bon), thousands of pilgrims come from all over the region around Tibet A-Li to make their way around this holy mountain. In doing so, they believe it will bring them peace and good fortune.

The circumambulatioin or kora, is made in a clockwise direction. For most people, the 52km circuit would mean a 2 or 3-day trek by foot. Some of the local Tibetans complete the kora within a day, starting from early hours and returning late in the evening.

You will experience trekking in high-altitude between 4600-5500m, and get up close to the foothills of this holy mountain in the hearts of the Tibetans. En-route, you will also see the vast wilderness of western Tibet A-Li prefecture and its harsh climatic conditions.

* Besides Mount Kailash, we also organise Pilgrimage Trek to MeiLi Snow Mountain in DiQing county, YunNan. Please contact us for details.

1) Mount Kailash, southwest view, with the distinction vertical mark slightly to the right. The summit stands at 6638m. Mount Kailash is known as 'Gang Rinpoche' in Tibetan. 'Gang' in Tibetan means snow, while 'Rinpoche' means the most sacred, most precious. Hence, 'GangRinpoche', means the most precious and sacred snow. Buddhists regard Kailash as one of the most sacred place in the universe.

2) Another shot on the western face the circumambulation or kora, is done in a clockwise manner. about 2-hour after you start your trek from DarChen, you will come to an open stony patch. This is a good place to capture some close-up pictures of the mountain.

3) Darchen, the main village in Kailash region This is the base camp of the circumambulation.
At this moment, there are no shower facilities. Accommodation is basic, but clean and comfortable. There is mobile phone signals in Darchen though. The locals said the China Mobile base station was installed only in 2006.

4) Wooden bridge en-route after the rest point at the 22km mark, the pilgrimage route becomes steeper as you start to make your ascent up the Dolma pass. This is a small wooden bridge right after the rest

5) Some pilgrims with porters/mules support horses and mules are also used
to assist in carrying some loads. rightfully, making the pilgrimage on horses are not allowed.

6) After the 22km monastery, seen at the far right, it is the most difficult part of the trek. It is uphill all the way to the 5540m Dolma pass. This stretch is tough, demanding a lot of determination and physical strength as you negotiate through the thin air, gasping for oxygen and putting each step forward.

7) There are several 'heavenly-burial' sites near the Dolma pass. according to the locals, there have been several incidents where pilgrims died along the way. some were carried all the way down, while some were given the 'heavenly-burial' (TianZang) right there. There are many used clothing, laid across the rocks near those sites. They also said that so far, all the fatalities are pilgrims from India, Pakistan and Nepal. No Chinese have died while doing the pilgrimage yet. The climb may seems endless, as you make your way up the pass. Endure, keep on going and very soon, you will find yourself at the highest point of the entire trek! there are many prayers flags and mani stones with scriptures at the Dolma pass.

8) Tibetans having lunch at Dolma pass after lunch, these locals would probably make their way all the way back to Darchen, and completing the kora by around 8pm. They are very friendly, and some will even invite you to join them for lunch!

9) Pilgrims going downhill After resting at the Dolma pass, you will start your descend all the way down to the eastern side of the mountain. The route down is a steep gravel path. Watch your steps as you can easily sprained an ankle here.

10) Turquoise lake after Dolma pass On the way down, just right after the summit, you will see a turquoise lake on the right.

11) Pilgrims on the vast steppes This is an easy, flat terrain that stretches for over 15km! Basically you will trek alongside the small river. Some part of the trail can be a little bit muddy, but generally nice and easy walk.

12) Approaching the main road to Darchen When you see this, you are almost out of the circuit. Another 6km or so, you will arrive back at Darchen. You can see another high mountain down the south direction. The XinJiang-Tibet route 219, cuts across from left to right.

13) Back to Darchen for a good rest Rest, recover and have a good meal at Darchen. For the first time, basic accommodation and simple food seems like a luxury after the kora! Moon rising over the shadow of the mountain on a clear evening.

14) Lake Manasarovar

15) Lake Rakshastal with Kailash in the background
