Detailed itinerary

Day01 - Arrive Sapporo Chitose / Cycle to Lake Toya (92km, 820m)

Upon arrival to Chitose International Airport, pickup by our vans and transfer to Lake Shikotsu.  Bike setup + lunch.  Take a walk along the scenic Lake Shikotsu, a volcanic caldera lake that does not freeze over in winter.  It is also the site Shikotsu Ice Festival held annually during winter around Jan-Feb.  Start cycling towards Lake Toya.  There a high pass of about 625m separating the 2 lakes.  After the mountain pass, it is downhill all the way to Lake Toya, another caldera lake.

Day02 - Hokkaido Ironman Bike Course - Lake Toya / Mt Yotei / Niseko-Annupuri (180km, 2400m)

Today is the longest day & probably also the toughest in the trip.  You start right from the hotel by the lake as you tackle the challenging 2015 Hokkaido Ironman Bike Course (discontinued after the last race).  The course follows the scenic road along Lake Toya, around Mount Yotei into Makkari & Kutchan, climbing the 800m Niseko-Annupuri pass before returning back to Lake Toya.  A very satisfying bike course for the avid road cyclist!

Day03 - UCI Niseko Classic 85km Experience Course (cycle 85km, 1300m)

Another rewarding ride awaits!  Experience the 85km UCI course with ascent of 1300m of the Niseko Classic.  Starting from Rankoshi, you head down along  towards the Sea of Japan before starting the climb back towards Niimi pass along an undulating course before ending at Niseko Grand Hirafu Resort.

Day04 - Niseko / Otaru (cycle 73km, 1200m)

Today might seems like a recovery ride after the past 2 days of challenging ones.

We head out towards the seaport town of Otaru.  Nonetheless, it is still a 75km ride with more than 1000m of ascend.  We will reach Otaru early for lunch, so that you have the entire afternoon free to enjoy this popular tourist attraction.

Day-5 - Otaru / Sapporo (cycle 70km, 1500m)

After a sumptuous breakfast in Otaru, we set off for the last segment of the journey back to Sapporo.

Instead of following the shortest path which tend to be a little busier, we ride the quiet backcountry road that climb up to Asari dam via the Sky Loop.  Though the distance may be only 70km, the total ascend is nearly 1500m as you make your way from sea level up to Kokusai Ski resort into Sapporo.

There are a couple of tunnels to pass through, so be sure to put on your front & rear safety blinkers.  Our route passes by Sapporo lake before continuing along Toyohira River, as we use the bikeways near Makomanai to arrive at the end point in front of Sapporo Clock Tower.

A big Congratulations for the past week of achievements & time for a good celebration in this exciting city.

Day06 - depart Sapporo
(optional: own extension)
