Trek (60km)

Apart of our fully-supported cycling tours, we also operate guided treks in our own  backyards, in the Tibetan regions of western SiChuan (or East Tibet), also known as the Kham region. From short treks to longer climbing expeditions, we offer ground-support services to our customers who love to explore these off-the-beaten trails in SiChuan.

Minya Konka, or Mount GongGa, stands at 7,556, is the highest peak in Sichuan, commonly known as the “King of SiChuan Mountains”. Minya Konka has a distinct pyramidal peak with steep slopes are perpetually covered in ice and snow, making it quite a sight to behold. There are around 159 glaciers around this region and most of them measure more than 100m in thickness.

This trekking itinerary takes you to the foothills of this might mountain, right to her base camp at 4200m and the secluded GongGa monastery, reachable only by foot.

Starting from YuLongXi Tibetan village, you cross the 4580m LongQingMa high-pass, where on a clear day, offers another spectacular view of Minya Konka.

The trek follows the MoXi valley down the stream which goes into BaWang lake which is often covered with beautifully-lined sand dunes.

Day04: YuLongXi / MoXi valley

Trekking starts today! It is uphill climb right from the beginning. Go slow and tackle the climb one step at a time. You should reach the high-pass at 4560m (approx. 3.5hr) to see Minya Konka.  From the LongQIngMa high-pass, you will be rewarded with an awesome view of Minya Konka on a clear day.

After a quick packed-lunch, we will trek along the ridgeline and descent down to MoXi valley. It is a slight uphill from the stream back to the ridge-line before we get to GongGa monastery (3750m). The monastery offers a close-up of Minya Konka and you will sleep inside the monastery in dormitory rooms.

Day05: MoXi valley / GongGa Monastery
It is a very easy day, so you have all the time in the morning to enjoy the campsite. Continue your trek up to GongGa Monastery. Undulating terrain all the way. GongGa Monastery is built near the end of the GongGa Glacier
(Tibetan monastery dormitory)

Day06: GongGa monastery / Base camp of Minya Konka 4200m

Trek to base camp along the river-bed up to the base camp to see Minya Konka upclose.  If your fitness allows, you can trek a further 2hr to see the glacier.

Day07: Base camp / GongGa monastery

Rise & shine to the cool & fresh mountain air.  Our leader/cook would be preparing breakfast for you.   After breakfast, follow the same trail back to the monastery.

Day08: GongGa monastery / BaWang Lake / CaoKe hot-spring resort

Today is also of the most enjoyable section. After breakfast in the monastery, we continue to trek along the valley. From the monastery, after a short uphill section, it is a long 700m descent down the valley. Follow the valley alongside the stream towards BaWang lake.

The trail here is generally undulating, with 2-3 sections of steep but very short uphill. Have quick packed-lunch by the lakeside. Continue the descent on the single track until we come to the end of the trekking trail at the dam (2950m), where our pre-arranged vehicle will pick you up and drive to the Tibetan township of CaoKe(1500m). After a long day, be rewarded with a nice hot-spring resort in CaoKe.

Day09: CaoKe / ChengDu
Take your chartered transport back to ChengDu.

Day10: Depart ChengDu
